The overall project included a complete redesign of MD 124, including the intersection with MD 28. More than one mile of a 2-lane street was upgraded to a 4-lane divided roadway.
SHA Office of Highway Development awarded this project second place in the In-house Design category of their 1997 annual awards program
Landscape architectural services included intersection improvement studies and the design of the streetscape.
Circulation patterns were studied to understand the need and placement for sidewalks and bus stops.
The median and roadsides offered opportunities to maintain the “green” character of the original street while also allowing the control of the pedestrian/bicycle/vehicular movements.
Major street trees, shrubs and concrete pavers were incorporated in the design of minimize maintenance, provide a sense of scale and reduce the vast appearance of the roadway within the corridor.
Coordination with the surrounding motifs allowed the character of the area to remain.
Responsibilities included coordinating with the client, users and the prime consultant doing the engineering for the roadway. Services included:
