The overall project included planting the roadside and median of US 40 at the intersection of MD 222.
The median of US 40 is a wide open section median with a centerline drainage swale, and the roadside includes sidewalks at the intersection. We concluded the design needed to be readable at both a pedestrian and vehicular scale.
Planting in the open section median was very limited by the centerline drainage swale and the required safety setbacks, therefore we concentrated more planting along the sidewalks adjacent to the roadside edge.
In addition to the challenges of designing planting in an open section median, the client was not able to provide any base information regarding the roadside.
All roadside opportunities were identified and mapped based on field measurements.
